Mike has been advising clients on intellectual property, technology and entertainment matters for over 18 years, and offers the perspective of having worked in-house as well as serving as outside counsel for hundreds of technology, life science and media companies.
Prior to starting Plumleigh Law, Mike was Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary at Critical Path, Inc., a leading provider of mobile messaging and digital media solutions and services.
Before going in house, Mike was a partner and co-founder of the Technology Transactions and Privacy practice groups in the San Francisco office of Cooley Godward LLP; and a partner in the Technology Group at Brobeck Phleger & Harrison LLP in Palo Alto.
Mike received his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law, where he was the Managing Editor of the UCLA Law Review. He began his legal career at Blanc Williams Johnston & Kronstadt, a boutique IP, technology and entertainment firm in Los Angeles.
Mike is a regular speaker and panelist on topics relating to the areas of intellectual property, digital media, open source software, strategic alliances, technology transactions, Internet and privacy law.
His publications include: Emerging Privacy Issues chapter of the PLI treatise “Advising High Technology Companies” (March 2004); “Privacy Law Update,” California Lawyer, July 2002; Cooley Bulletin, “Recent Developments in Privacy Law” (Oct. 2001) www.cooley.com; “Information Technology in Silicon Valley, In Brief,” WORLD LEGAL FORUM, July/August 1999; and “Digital Audio Tape: New Fuel Stokes the Smoldering Home Taping Fire,” 37 UCLA Law Review 733 (1990), for which Mike received 1st Prize in the ASCAP/Nathan Burkan Memorial Copyright Competition at UCLA.
Mike is a member of the State Bar of California and is AV® Peer Review Rated (Very High/Preeminent) by
Martindale-Hubbell.
Mike received a B.A., magna cum laude, in Economics from UCLA. He also studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he majored in music performance and composition. Prior to pursuing law, Mike was a professional musician, orchestrator, and music publisher, including worldwide tours as a trumpet player with the Buddy Rich and Harry James Orchestras, shows and recording work in Los Angeles, and engagements with Clark Terry, Mel Tormé, and Joe Williams. More recently Mr. Plumleigh has performed with Steve Miller, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, and at the San Francisco, San Jose and Monterey Jazz Festivals.
